Of course, it is almost never straightforward, and politicians can spend life-times on issues that never see resolution. But on the other hand, it was through politics that slavery was abolished, the welfare state was invented, education became the norm, human rights became inalienable, peace reigned post-war Europe… the list could go on. And so I believe we are called to love our neighbours, and use whatever tools at our disposable to do so as deeply and comprehensively as we can.
And politics is one of the most powerful tools we have. In the lecture, Farron told his testimony about how he became a Christian. He moved to Singapore as a teenager, and started reading some books that had been left by the previous tenants. However, over the subsequent days, Farron became a Christian through the reading of various other books.

That this period covers the Olympics is, of course, purely co-incidental.
When I mentioned this to somebody this evening they jokingly observed that I had only just been away…. Which is true. This year was no exception.

In the evening we looked at Genesis and Revelation with a variety of speakers. With respect to the main theme I came away hugely encouraged. I think it would be fair to say that it is rare for me to hear anything new at conventions these days. The Keswick Jazz and Blues Festival drew large numbers with several events standing-room-only affairs at venues across the market town. The weather began in typically Lakeland fashion overcast with the threat of rain and ended in atypical fashion - two blue sky days with wall-to-wall sunshine.
Concerts from noon 'til late, venues club, function room, church all within easy walking distance, food, drink, Main Street jazz sessions, the annual brolly parade and, of course, all of this to a glorious Lakeland backdrop. Over the years the band has raised hundreds of pounds and they'll be back next year doing more of the same.
